Junior Girls

  • About our Girls Program

Our dedicated Girls Football Program currently runs from Auskick through to Under 16’s. We strive to provide a fun, inclusive and supportive environment for girls.

We have a 42% girl participation at the Ascot Vale Junior Football Club and in 2024 we will be field multiple teams in each of the Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 girls competitions.

As one of the largest junior girls programs in the EDFL, we typically have multiple teams in each age group. This means we have a more advanced team competing in Division One, as well as a development team in a lower division which is ideal for less confident girls and girls new to AFL football.

  • Coaching

We are proud to have both male and female coaches who are AFL Level 1 Certified Coaches and hold a current Working With Children’s Check (WWCC). All teams typically have 2-3 coaches with at least one Coach per team female.

Coaches are supported with the use of professional paid skills coaches. In 2024 the club engaged professional kicking coaches, ruck and clearance coaching and a specialist tackling coach to ensure kids learn the most correct and safe way to play. Our coaching team is led by Simon Wiggins who played many seasons with Carlton AFL.

In 2023 both of the under 8 girls teams had adult coaches as well as under 16 girls helping to teach skills at training and supporting during game days. At the heart of our club is a community spirit and the model behaviour from our older girls to invest time back into the youngest girls is great for everyone involved.

  • Training and Games

All football training sessions and home games are played locally at Walter St Reserve, Ascot Vale and Merv Huges Oval, Edgewater.

Training is typically on Wednesday night with an additional training night on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights depending on the age group. Training is typically 5:30-6:30 for the younger groups and 6:30-7:30 for the older girls. We run a preseason training program from Oct-Nov and then start back training in February once school begins.

Games occur on Sunday morning and start between 08:30am to 2pm depending on age.

The playing season starts in April and finishes in July with 14 home and away games followed by finals if reached. The final fixture won’t be released until March when all teams are registered to the league.
